Unless by prior arrangement, all classes are at the purpose built comfortable studio-workshop in Downs Road, Maldon. Disabled toilet and easy access available. Drop off point for sewing machines etc is beside the workshop, with parking in the car park 2 minutes away. Tea, coffee and biscuits freely available. The high street is 5 minutes away for lunches and a stroll beside the river to see the barges is 10 minutes walk.

Machine appliqué & hand sewing picture based on the Ordinance Survey map of your area, with your house at the centre... a simple technique originally based on the works by Bev Folkard. You can make a lovely early Christmas gift or enjoy it for yourself...

October 26th 2019- Felt Vase Wrap with additions

Suitable for felt novices!

Using felt, with additions such as ribbons, dyed scrim, fabric scraps or fleece curls, make a felted vase wrap, which is removable or not as you prefer, in colours to suit your room. This makes a lovely Christmas present made to suit the room colours of the person receiving the gift... Easy to make and enjoy the benefits of the felt roller to save a bit of effort and time...

23rd November 2019 - a modern appliqué of your house using brightly coloured felt and linen

This class is open to all and requires use of a sewing machine.

In this class, you will make a house-themed appliqué, with an appealing and fun style of your chosen house or you could make that of a relative or friend for Christmas! Along the lines of Art by Smudge cards, you will make your own version of a multi-coloured representation of your house, learning (if desired) how to make small pieces of bright patterned felt, which you will combine with lively fabrics and plain linen to make your representation of the house. Stitching on top adds detail...Experienced felters/sewers will be able to take the accuracy to the level they desire!

14th December 2019 - Sharon Blackman Christmas hand-sewn appliqué

This class is open to all. 

Within this class, under the expert eye of Sharon Blackman, you will make a Christmas themed appliqué, with a charmingly naive style, using hand-sewing. She will bring examples to inspire you or feel free to make your favourite Xmas themed picture.. or something completely different if you hate/ don't celebrate Christmas! This workshop is great either way and is back by popular demand!

25th January 2020 - Mosaic artist Eva Jaber Valentine's heart or door number plaque

Eva will be showing us how to make a lovely vintage ceramic mosaic heart plaque just in time for a Valentine's day gift! She will provide all materials and you can relax and make your mosaic in the comfortable 'Twixt Time and Tide workshop. The heart is for indoor use as a decoration. If you prefer, you can make a house number plaque for outside your front door... Please give advance notice if you would like to make the house number as the materials are slightly different.

15th February 2020 - Felt spring flowers table runner

Some experience of felting is required to make a runner but a floral central table mat is quite possible for beginners. Enjoy an opportunity to make a floral felt table runner to celebrate Easter. A simple pattern with your choice of flowers around a solid coloured runner with spots. After laying out and prefelting the fleece, the runner can be rolled by the felting machine, saving a lot of effort.

14th March & 4th April 2020- Flower felt picture with stitch and appliqué in 2 parts

Part 1 : felting   & part 2: appliqué

In this first of two parts, in March, we will felt the background, including the flowers in the background, adding in scraps of prefelts, scrim, wools, ribbons etc. After prefelting it, the picture can be put into the machine to finish it.

In the second part, in April,we will make some 3D flowers, stitch them on and adding stitch decoration by machine and hand.

May 2nd 2020- Needle felting introduction and felted hare with Toni Peers

June 20th 2020 - Introduction to eco printing using locally sourced plant materials

After an introduction to the subject, we will use ferrous oxides, ferrous acetate and potassium aluminium sulphate as mordants to secure the dye, and locally sourced plants and other items. We will prepare various cloths and leave them to soak for 24 hours or more. We will arrange a mutual time for exposing the dyed fabrics. Look up some plant dyes beforehand and bring some along!

26th September 2020 with Prue van der Hoorn - Introduction to techniques & picture/scarf paintings

This is an introductory workshop for the complete beginner using iron fix paints and steam fix dyes. Prue will demonstrate how to use salt, Gutta and shading techniques. You will try out the methods on a silk card piece and progress to a scarf, practising the techniques and using them as desired on your last piece.

Dressmaking and Pattern Alterations

Small classes : beginners - daytime


Workshops


Mondays 2-4pm

£10 weekly  payable as a half term booking, or £15/week paid weekly

A gentle introduction to dressmaking in small classes, covering all aspects from measuring yourself and pattern alterations to completing all basic forms of garment, from skirts and tops to trousers and jackets. An ability to use your own machine is required ( please see the sew and craft class if an introduction to the machine is required). You will provide your patterns and fabric but general items such as draft pattern paper or calico available at cost. Maximum 5 people per class to ensure close attention, minimum 2 people. It is easier if you start the course from the beginning and work right through, but if preferred, you can come half termly and just make the item being covered in that half term. 

EASTER TERM - 1 skirt, 2 shirt

SUMMER TERM - 1 dress, 2 jacket

CHRISTMAS TERM - 1 trousers, 2 top

Each item is at beginners level, but pattern alterations and more compicated patterns are covered to enable you to move to the next step.

Sew and Craft Class

Tuesday evening 4-6 pm and 6-8pm

£10 payable weekly or £7/ week payable in advance as a half term booking

A fun and gentle introduction to many different techniques, including hand embroidery and stitch, use of sewing machines, felting, decoupage, mosaic, applique, papier mache frames, with the general aim of everyone making together their own version of the (usually) weekly project, whether seasonal, home or personal items such as jewellry, scarves or cards. You provide your chosen materials or buy them at cost from the class. Maximum 10 people, minimum 5 people. 

New class  6-8pm for complete novices who would like to learn simple skills and relax for a couple of hours.

Twixt' Time and Tide Textiles Class

£15/week or £10/ week payable as a half term booking

This group is for those who are already reasonably confident in both their knowledge of sewing skills and in the use of different types of creative textiles, and its members work on longer and more personalised projects, using a different textile skills set each half term. We build on skills learnt in the Sew and Craft Class and elsewhere, and often learn from each other. We may practise a technique in greater depth following a visit by an outside artist, or practise a technique made popular by a particular person, putting our own slant on it. Beginners' soft furnishings and furniture renovation and upcycling course

£15 weekly or  £10  /week payable in advance as a half term booking

 A course to enable you, as a complete beginner, to save a significant sum on the making of your choice and design of soft furnishings by enabling you to make them yourself. This will give you the ability to make items from a simple flap cushion to interlined curtains, shaped pelmets, roman blinds or covering a stool. Some work will require basic knowledge of how to use a sewing machine. Maximum 10 people, minimum 5 people. Call me to discuss your requirements.

Childrens' After School Sewing Skills

Mondays 4-5.30 pm - craft and sewing skills

£10/weekly payable half termly in advance 

A fun easy way to learn to sew. Projects will be in easy stages, but will lead to basic competence on a sewing machine and an ability to achieve independence on the sewing machine, from making their own easy - sew clothes to cards, jewellry and other projects. Sewing machines could be provided and all materials required will be easily available from local shops or provided at cost or free. This could be the start of the next Haute Couture designer! For children from 8yrs -11yrs.
